Comprised of trios for violin, clarinet, and piano, this program transports the listener through a century of dance and folk music, highlighting these genres as powerful vehicles for cultural expression. Both the bittersweet harmonies found in Aram Khachaturian’s Trio and the distinctively mysterious and impish dances of Bela Bartok’s Contrasts note the influence of rich folk traditions revered by these composers. Contemporary works from living composers Stephen Hartke and Bright Sheng bolster the program, sketching an aural timeline for the expressive and colorful medium of folk and dance music that inspires these works.
