Brahms After All
Bryant Manning

George Costanza once recalled that he was only able beat the video game Frogger in high school because of a “perfect combination of Mountain Dew and mozarella, and just the right amount of grease on the joystick.” I suppose a similarly rare combo made for one of my favorite–if not favorite–concerts of the year. As part of the free, weekly “Rush Hour” series, local group Fifth House Ensemble gave a deeply engaging performance of Brahms’ Clarinet Trio downtown at St. James Cathedral. The weather was perfecto, hordes of friendly people gathered at a preconcert reception, and wine was served.  I’m not yet on board with the stewed acoustics of the church, but I still can’t recall when a 25-minute stretch of music felt like 5.
