Verklärte Nacht

The “envelope pushing” (Chicago Tribune) Fifth House Ensemble invites you to the debut of an exhilarating cross-media performance of Arnold Schoenberg’s Verklärte Nacht, Tuesday, February 17, 2015, 7:00pm, at Chicago’s Mayne Stage. In collaboration with Chicago based film artist Adebukola Bodunrin, the vivid dialogue of Richard Dehmel’s poem and Schoenberg’s dark, visceral masterwork takes flight in an astonishing experimental animation Bodunrin describes as “A celestial journey exploring intangible feelings and moods, drawing parallels between the expanse of space and the complicated depths of human emotions.”

Cliff Colnot’s original arrangement of Verklärte Nacht for 5HE serves as the musical centerpiece of the program, expanding Schoenberg’s original string sextet to 5HE’s large mixed ensemble instrumentation. 5HE’s violist Clark Carruth explains, “What attracted us most to Verklärte Nacht was that it already tells an incredibly emotional tale, and when we imagined adding the voices of our woodwinds to Schoenberg’s original lush string timbres, we realized the telling of this story could only become further heightened and beautified.”

Guided by themes of love, forgiveness, and inexpressible gratitude, additional repertoire features Kevin Puts’ contemplative and lyrical Seven Seascapes and the delicate interplay of Guillaume Connesson’s Sextuor.
