WEEKLY SPOTLIGHT

Degenerate Art - written by Eric Heidbreder

I’ve been communicating back and forth with Keath Sodapop and Che for the past few months. We’ve been bouncing creative ideas and logistics ideas (which are still creative!) off each other and really grinding away to think about what was going to make “Degenerate Art” a successful show. One thing I appreciate about Keath’s process of designing the artwork for this show is how every symbol on the canvas has a purpose and interacts with the other elements of the painting.

I went into this project having a general idea of what Degenerate Art was, historically, but our partners at the ACLU, Holocaust Community Services, Deborah’s Place, CMK, University of Chicago, Unsilenced, Artists at Risk, and The Guild Literary Complex were the ones that really told the story of what that means today.

After all the work it’s taken to put this show together, it’s time to make my own art: pepperoni pizza. But I’ll arrange all the pepperonis into a smiley face. There’s still one more performance of this on the 29th of April at the Spertus Institute. Hope to see you there!

WHERE IN THE FIFTH IS UNCLE TRAVELING MATT?

From the journal of Uncle Traveling Matt:

"This week brought Fifth House to Edgewood Middle School to teach some younglings about characters in the story of 'Luna de Cuernos'. Our wonderful Danny Cohen wasn't with us so I was put in charge of running the projections. I dare say that I did a decent job."
