WEEKLY SPOTLIGHT
Wind Chamber Music Class at Roosevelt University - Written by Eric Heidbreder
We had a great time coaching the Roosevelt winds on their works in progress this week, I love entering coaching situations with an open mind to see what I (or in this case, Melissa and I) can offer to a group based on where they're at in the rehearsal process. I was excited to see a PA system being set up when we got there, but I didn't know what it would be used for - one of the groups must have switched their rep.
We had the pleasure of hearing a saxophone quartet play Jacob TV's Jesus is Coming. We worked on a few sections of the piece and focused on how a group can make musical decisions quickly and effectively by trying all the possible variables before making a final choice. At a certain point in the coaching, a question about an articulation came up, and after diving in and trying some different musical options and still not feeling completely settled on any one way, we all remembered, "oh yeah, we can email Jacob and ask." We're looking forward to working with Roosevelt musicians more next school year. Thanks for having us!
WHERE IN THE FIFTH IS UNCLE TRAVELING MATT?
From the journal of Uncle Traveling Matt:
"I was beginning to get the 'cabin fever' as it's known and I tried my darnedest to get outside but I was told that I had to stay in front of this machine and help to fix problems. I've been here for 5 days straight and I'm hungry and tired. If I don't make it, tell my friends that I love them."
(He's just being melodramatic and he's fine. Thanks for helping me put out every administrative fire ever this week, Uncle Traveling Matt!)
RANDOM MUSIC WE’RE DIGGING THIS WEEK
To some of the Fifth House staff this week, this one is self-explanatory. However, it's also tax season and that can be a trying time for everyone. So in the immortal words of Freddie Mercury, "Keep Yourself Alive".
TOP 10
Abbey Springer is a total rockstar lifesaver and we love her to all ends of the earth!
Melissa submitted just about every grant on the planet. Holy crap are you kidding me? Way to go!
Congratulations to Monica Benson on an extremely successful event to benefit the women of Deborah's Place!
Melissa, Deuce, Grace, and Parker all helped to coach some wind chamber music at Roosevelt. And no one cried!
We had a cool coffee time meeting with a new potential partner! Hopefully we'll have more on that soon!
Eric did some awesome work on our Living Language education show script. Let's all go eat giant sandwiches!
Grace, Elizandro, Parker, and Deuce are masters of Music Can Tell A Story and had two more successful performances at Leif Ericson school.
The string players survived their first of four 7am coachings. Hang in there ya'll, I'm rooting for you from my bed!
Katherine got a haircut (and Parker abused his power of seeing everyone's calendar)
Dan is an old man.
THIS WEEK IN HAIKU
Living Language time,
Ravinia + Vieaux,
Be there or be square.
YOUTUBE
Sometimes things just don't go as planned. This was one of those weeks.
Everyday started with what felt like a victory only for life to come barreling in to prove us otherwise. That being said, we very much enjoy watching the same thing happen to other people. Watch this dumb kid.
SHOWER THOUGHTS
The first person to record their own voice probably thought they did it wrong when they listened to it.
COMIC
This is following an actual 30 min. skit that Deuce and I had in the car once. Turns out we are considered by some to be humorous.
