Issue 16
Just call us Duracell because we seriously need a recharge. We had a great trip to Ohio and a wonderful performance of Journey LIVE! Isn't it just the way that we will be at another school for a performance of Of Time and Space this coming Tuesday and then jetting off to San Francisco for another performance of Journey with students of the San Francisco Conservatory of Music.
We might not even bother unpacking...

WEEKLY SPOTLIGHT
Young Composer's Workshop - Written by Parker Nelson
The Friday morning before our Journey LIVE performance at Kenyon College, Katherine and I lead some graphic score workshops with both middle school and high school students from Centerburg High School. Both of these sessions were eventful in their own ways. The middle school session was highlighted by one student performing a backflip on stage and the high school session was home to perhaps the first ever graphic score interpretation battle between Katherine and myself.
However, the best moment for me came after the workshops were over. In talking to teachers and administration from the school, it became clear that assemblies and workshops like ours were uncommon, if not completely foreign to the students of that school. Based on their location (lovingly described as the literal middle of nowhere), many groups just don't travel to the school to give presentations or performances. After the workshops had finished and we were in the process of packing up, two students came onstage and told us that we hadn't called on them to have their graphic scores performed (with 250 students in each session, there were a lot of hands to call on). They asked if it would be possible to perform their pieces before we left and Katherine sat down at the piano and brought it to life.
Sometimes it is the small parts of a visit that highlight the effectiveness of the workshop. Hearing that two students so invested in a project they had only learned about 60 minutes prior, was a great indicator that we had, at the very least for those two students, made a difference.
WHERE IN THE FIFTH IS UNCLE TRAVELING MATT?
From the journal of Uncle Traveling Matt:
"I had been coaxed out of retirement because I had heard from this 'Fifth House Ensemble' that there was a great journey to be had. They were certainly not lying! After a long ride to the state of Ohio, we embarked on a great journey indeed. Lead by a composer of music, we traversed deserts, valleys, caves, mountains, and even experienced a hint of total enlightenment in the form of our rebirth as a being of pure light energy. Just when I thought I had seen it all, the after party in the hotel room with Fifth House and their friends was also quite fun. I dare say, I had never seen popcorn eaten out of a hotel ice bucket before. It was quite the eventful week and I do say, I have a feeling I'll be sticking around with these fellows for the foreseeable future!"
RANDOM MUSIC WE’RE DIGGING THIS WEEK
When one spends 6 and a half hours in the car with the mother of 2 children, some things just come out. Special thanks to Grace for changing all of our lives by introducing this song to us. Keep an eye out for the Fifth House cover coming soon to a children's show near you.
